[edit] Background
Owen Cook graduated with a degree in philosophy from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.[2]
Owen first became interested in pick-up as a young man after he broke up with his long-time girlfriend with whom he had moved in while still in Ottawa. In Foundations, Owen spoke about how he almost dropped out of school, suffered from severe depression, and reached his 'breaking point'.[3]
Owen assumed the handle 'TylerDurden' when he first found the underground seduction-community back in 2002 in homage to the fictional character Tyler Durden from the Chuck Palahniuk novel Fight Club, because of the change inspired in Cook upon first seeing the movie adaptation.[3]
He traveled to Los Angeles in order to develop his skills at picking up and seducing women, to live with Neil Strauss and Erik von Markovik, aka Mystery, at their mansion in Project Hollywood, moving into a closet and using it as his bedroom.[4] It is from this experience that Owen is perhaps most infamously known, recorded by Strauss in his autobiographical novel The Game. Neil Strauss reported his mistrust of Tyler Durden in the book and part of the book's plot is how Tyler manipulates Mystery into a situation where he's forced to move out of the mansion; Strauss portrays Tyler Durden as manipulative and power-driven, citing that Durden was in the game more for the power than the sex.
Strauss and Mystery mentored Owen as a novitiate in the community and watched as he developed his own distinct approach to gaming the opposite sex in parallel and apparent competition to their own. His efforts eventually resulted in the creation of Real Social Dynamics (commonly referred to as RSD), a company based in Los Angeles, California, in 2002 with Nicholas Kho. The company was one of many where men would take paying customers out "into the field" and demonstrate how to meet women live. Cook is responsible for much of the creative material produced by the company, and is well known for his distinctive stream of consciousness style of writing and detailed break down of seemingly complicated social interactions that originated in his writings on the message board of moderated alt.seduction.fast.[4]
Following the release of the Strauss's book, and the negative publicity it gave to Owen and Real Social Dynamics, Owen suffered a period of psychological, sexual, and financial setbacks, with Real Social Dynamics becoming overwhelmingly in debt. Owen claims that the company has since recovered and is thriving.
In August 2008, Owen announced on his company blog that he would be "wrapping up with [his] role as figurehead of RSD and moving into self help."[5] However, after entering the self-help industry, Owen continues to teach Real Social Dynamics bootcamps every weekend in Los Angeles.
[edit] DVD Series
Owen's DVD releases began with the Foundations program in 2006. In 2007's Transformations, he introduced many of the major instructors at RSD and began to more fully develop his philosophy of 'inner game', a term in the seduction community referring to a more internal focus on personal development in order to create attraction, as opposed to the 'outer game' techniques popularized in mainstream media.[6]
Owen moved to Hawaii in 2006. In the beginning of 2008 he released his Blueprint Decoded course, a DVD set that continued to highlight inner game as it applied not only to pick-up, but also to countless other aspects of one's personal life. [6] He has served as a mentor to other instructors who he employs, most notably the presenters from his Transformations series--Tim, Hoobie, Ozzie and Jeffy.[3]
[edit] Beliefs
Owen promotes the belief that any man is capable of achieving attraction, regardless of mores imposed by social conditioning. He argues that physical appearance, income and age have little bearing on attraction, and rather that attraction is created by the relative value that one person has compared to another.[7]
Much of his company's literature is based on ways to increase one's inherent value, with a large emphasis placed on acquiring social reference points by initiating conversations with strangers in social gatherings.[3]
Frequent topics of discussion in his company's publications include self actualization, personal identity, masculine polarity and empowering belief systems.[6]
On several occasions, Owen has cited Eckhart Tolle as a major influence.
[edit] Blueprint Book
Since at least late 2005 in various media [6], Owen has disclosed that he has been working on writing a book. Originally to be published in 2006[8], the book was shelved and the Blueprint DVD program was released instead. A very rough draft of the original Blueprint book, was leaked to the internet in 2006. Owen is planning on releasing the finished book sometime in 2009, after another book on relationships.
